What are you watching?

Just watched a great film called Hidden Gems starring Adam Sandler. Ironically, the film itself is a hidden gem. Sandler's performance is magnificent and the entire movies pace and beats are phenomenal. Sandler plays a degenerate gambler who is on the razors edge in NYC as a jewely dealer and as a degenerate gambler myself the roller coaster of emotions he goes through are spot on.

It also has cameos from Kevin Garnett and the greatest sports talk radio host of all time Mike Francesca who I have been a huge fan of for almost 30 years so that was really cool. Both were great in their roles.

I HIGHLY recommend this film. Solid 8.3725 out of 10 and Sandler could be argued worthy of an Oscar nomination. Its a performance right on the edge of brilliant.

Also started watching The Irishman.

2 hrs in and its great. Hear a lot of talk about the CGI younger DeNiro but honestly its seamless and not even noticeable. So far its meat and potatoes Scorsese. Nothing extraordinary but a solidly good film. I'll update when I finish it since its 3+ fucking hours long.......lol.

In the interest of not sounding tacky, I almost wasn't going to recommend 6Underground because I feel like we all get served up the same tired promoted shit from Netflix, but this one had some decent scoring, choreography and cinematography with the action sequences. Reminded me a little of Smokin' Aces.

It's a couple hours and highly digestible.

So to wrap up The Irishman.

It felt like a swan song for Scorsese and kind of like that last 50 pt game MJ put up just to show he still had it. The movie itself was good to borderline great, but its not on par with Scorsese's best and had the same pace and feel of Casino which was basically Goodfellas 2.0. This would be 3.0. Terrific film, but not an all time great by any means.

The 2 performances that stood out were Pesci and Pacino.

DeNiro was great as well, but those two really delivered. They both stole the show in 2 different ways. Pesci in his toned down understated role, and Pacino in his over the top performance as Hoffa. We've seen 100 portrayals of Hoffa over the years including Nicholson so its a tough part to own, but Pacino did it. There was a visceral frustration you could feel through DeNiros character at his behavior.

The great thing Scorsese did in this film was approach Hoffa not from the man himself, but from his number 2. Which offered a whole different perspective towards him as a man and the events that lead up to his demise. It was expertly crafted by Scorsese, but as I said, it really just played like Goodfellas 3.0.

However, the film should be treasured because you have top notch performances in the same film with DeNiro, Pacino, and Pesci. We will not see this again. This film definitely felt like it was Martins last shot and he put out an excellent film, but its not top tier Scorsese by any stretch.

Its pretty obvious to see this is the last we are going to see of any of these actors or Scorsese in a Major film so on that level it delivered. They can all go out on a high note with their integrity intact.

It's solid fun. Lots of satisfyingly "Star Wars" moments, especially if you ever read any of the Boba Fett books, or bounty hunter short stories.

I tried. Couldn't get through 10 minutes. Michael Bay is so hit-or-miss. I love Bad Boys (and II), 13 Hours, The Rock... Can't sit through a Transformers movie, or 6 Underground to save my life.

Same. I tried...I really did try. I like Ryan Reynolds, so I was hoping this would be good. After the car chase, which was great BTW, it just lost me.
I have been watching Mad Dogs on Amazon. It's pretty damn funny...

This thing along with that scumbag Karate Kid series on Youtube are two things Ill probably never consume because Ill have to sign up and cancel a service just to see it and I ain't ever been that desperate to take in pop culture that I would go through that kind of trouble. There isn't enough content even with that brand to make it worth it and YT's paid functionality improvements should be put into practice instead of being dangled like a rotten carrot.

Felt the same actually until I got past all the character intro. Final scenes and the special effects with the ordinance was some of the most satisfying for me personally in quite some time (new shit mind you, but great use of the M67 all the same).

Really enjoyed Mad Dogs and wished there were more. Agree w/Mack about the Irishmen and thoroughly enjoyed it over a long afternoon and spent like 6 hours sipping on it thoughtfully like a fine wine; close to as good a film as we're ever going to get.
